Bile Pigment Test

Bile Pigment Test

Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed

Bile pigments are compounding that range in color from greenish-yellow to yellow and are by-products of the liver's breakdown of hemoglobin. They make up a significant portion of bile, a substance secreted by the liver that helps the body absorb fats by dissolving them into manageable globules.

The two primary kinds of bile pigments are as follows:

  • Bilirubin
  • Urobilinogen

The latter is created as a result of bilirubin decrease. Although urobilinogen in urine in modest amounts is generally regarded as normal, the presence of high urobilinogen or bilirubin levels in urine may be a sign of liver disease.

This is due to the fact that these pigments begin to leak out of your liver and into the bloodstream when it is experiencing liver failure. As the kidneys filter the blood, bile pigment levels start to appear in the urine.

This examination checks for bile pigments in your urine. Checking for illnesses and functioning of the liver is its main purpose.

If you exhibit any of the following symptoms, your doctor can recommend a bile pigment test:

  • nausea and vomiting together
  • Pain and discomfort in the abdomen
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • persistent fatigue
  • (Jaundice) Yellowing of the eyes and skin
  • Pruritus (intense itching of skin due to the increased concentration of bile pigments in the body)

The majority of these symptoms are linked to one type of liver disease or another.
