Bone Marrow Smear

Bone Marrow Smear

Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed

Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy are procedures used to collect and examine bone marrow, which is the spongy tissue found inside some of your larger bones.

Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy can determine whether your bone marrow is healthy and producing enough blood cells. These procedures are used by doctors to diagnose and monitor blood and marrow diseases, such as some cancers, as well as fevers of unknown origin.

Bone marrow is divided into two parts: fluid and solid. A needle is used to extract a sample of the fluid portion of bone marrow aspiration. A needle is used to extract a sample of the solid portion of bone marrow during a biopsy.

Bone marrow aspiration can be done alone, but it is usually done in conjunction with bone marrow biopsy. These procedures may be referred to collectively as a bone marrow exam.

Why is it done?
A bone marrow exam provides specific information about the health of your bone marrow and blood cells.
If blood tests are abnormal or do not provide enough information about a suspected problem, your doctor may order a bone marrow exam.
A bone marrow examination may be performed by your doctor to:

  • Determine the cause of a disease or condition involving bone marrow or blood cells.
  • Determine a disease's stage or progression.
  • Check to see if your iron levels are adequate.
  • Keep track of a disease's treatment.
  • Look into an unidentified fever.

A bone marrow examination can be used to diagnose a variety of conditions. These are some examples:

  • Anemia
  • Leukopenia, leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, thrombocytosis, pancytopenia, and polycythemia are all blood cell conditions in which too few or too many of certain types of blood cells are produced.
  • Blood or bone marrow cancers, such as leukemias, lymphomas, and multiple myeloma
  • Cancers that have spread from another part of the body, such as the breast, to the bone marrow
  • Hemochromatosis
  • Unknown origin fevers
