CA 125

CA 125

Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed

The CA-125 (cancer antigen 125) protein in the blood is measured by this test. Many women with ovarian cancer have high CA-125 values. A pair of female reproductive glands called the ovaries produce and store ova (eggs) as well as female hormones. When a woman's ovary experiences unchecked cell proliferation, ovarian cancer results. In the United States, ovarian cancer ranks as the sixth most frequent cancer among women.

This test is not used to evaluate women who have a low risk of ovarian cancer because high CA-125 levels can also be an indicator of other illnesses besides the disease. Most typically, women with ovarian cancer who have already received a diagnosis have a CA-125 blood test. It can assist in determining whether cancer treatment is effective or whether your cancer has returned after treatment has ended.

Other names include CA-125 tumor marker, glycoprotein antigen, ovarian cancer antigen, and cancer antigen 125.

What does it serve?

Using a blood test for CA-125, one can:

  • Keep an eye on the ovarian cancer treatment. Reduced CA-125 readings typically indicate that the therapy is effective.
  • After a successful course of treatment, look to determine if the cancer has returned.
  • Women who are at a high risk of ovarian cancer should be screened.

Why do I require a blood test for CA-125?

If you are receiving treatment for ovarian cancer, a blood test for CA-125 may be necessary. To determine if your treatment is having the desired effect and to assess your recovery following treatment, your healthcare professional may test you periodically.

If you have certain ovarian cancer risk factors, you could also require this test. You could be more vulnerable if you:

  • own a gene that makes you more susceptible to developing ovarian cancer. These are the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes.
  • a member in your family has ovarian cancer.
  • formerly battled uterine, breast, or colon cancer.
