Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
A number of cells, especially breast cancer cells, produce the protein known as cancer antigen 15-3 (CA15-3). The protein is able to enter the blood and be tested there.
Most women with breast cancer that has progressed to other regions of the body have CA15-3 levels that are greater than usual (called metastatic breast cancer). Because certain cancer cells don't overproduce the antigen, not all types of breast cancer will result in an increase in CA 15-3 levels.
The purpose of a CA15-3 tests
CA15-3 is a tumor indicator.
Tt is used to monitor the effectiveness of breast cancer treatment and search for cancer that has returned or recurred after treatment.
This test, along with others like hormone receptor testing and HER2 status testing, may be ordered if you are identified as having breast cancer that has metastasized or spread to other parts of the body.
Because the levels of this protein are rarely greater than normal at this point, it is not possible to assess CA15-3 in early-stage breast cancer.
