CPK

CPK

Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed

CPK is a type of enzyme. Enzymes are complex proteins that are necessary for the body to function properly. Creatine phosphokinase (CPK) is another name for creatine kinase (CK). CPK is required for muscles to function properly. Creatine kinase is found throughout the body, including the heart, brain, skeletal muscle, bladder, stomach, and colon. When a muscle is damaged, CPK leaks into the blood and levels rise. There are various forms of CPK that can be organ specific.
Identifying which type of CPK is elevated aids in determining which tissue has been damaged. CPK is a significant biochemical marker that is found in high concentrations during muscle damage.

The CPK test is performed to determine the health of muscle tissue. Creatinine kinase enzyme levels are measured during the test.

What is the purpose of the CPK test?

  • A CPK test determines the amount of total CPK enzymes in a patient's serum.
  • To detect any cardiac muscle damage that may aid in the diagnosis of a heart attack.
  • To assess the efficacy of the provided therapy in terms of muscle damage.
  • To determine the source of chest pain.
  • To diagnose muscular dystrophy.
  • To determine the presence of dermatomyositis, malignant hyperthermia, polymyositis, and other muscle diseases.
