Clotting Time Test

Clotting Time Test

Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed

The prothrombin time, also known as the PT or pro time test, is a blood clotting test.

Prothrombin is a protein that your liver produces. It is one of many factors in your blood that aid in proper clotting.

Why is it done?

If you are taking the blood-thinning medication warfarin, your prothrombin time is usually monitored. The prothrombin time is expressed as an international normalized ratio in this case.

If your doctor is concerned about your blood's ability to clot, he or she may recommend a prothrombin time test before surgery.

The prothrombin time test may also be used to screen for liver disease. It is one of several tests used to screen people who are in need of a liver transplant. The model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) screening is a scoring system for determining the severity of chronic liver disease.

If your doctor suspects you have another health problem, such as liver disease or a bleeding disorder, you may require additional testing to confirm your diagnosis.
