Dengue Serology

Dengue Serology

Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed

Dengue fever testing is used to determine whether a person has been infected if they have symptoms and have recently been exposed to dengue. Without laboratory tests, the infection is difficult to diagnose because symptoms may initially resemble other diseases, such as malaria. Serology testing for dengue virus-specific antibodies (IgG and IgM) can help confirm a primary or secondary diagnosis. In both primary and secondary infections, IgM is produced approximately 5 days after infection, whereas IgG is produced approximately 2 to 4 weeks after primary infection and almost immediately after secondary infection.

What is the purpose of a dengue fever test?

If you live in or have recently travelled to a dengue-infested area and have symptoms of dengue fever, you may require this test. The following symptoms may appear four to seven days after being bitten by an infected mosquito:

  • High fever (104°F or higher) all of a sudden
  • glandular swelling
  • Skin rash on the face
  • Pain behind the eyes and/or severe headache
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Fatigue

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) has more severe symptoms that can be fatal. If you have had dengue fever symptoms and/or have been in a dengue-infected area, you may be at risk for DHF. Seek medical attention right away if you or your child exhibits any of the following symptoms:

  • Abdominal pain that is unbearable
  • Vomiting that won't stop
  • Gum bleeding
  • The nose bleeds
  • Bleeding beneath the skin, which may appear as bruises
  • Blood in the urine or stools
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Skin that's cold and clammy
  • Restlessness
