The level of Hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs) is measured to determine whether vaccination is required or whether protective immunity has been achieved following a vaccination regimen.
Because there are different serologic subtypes of the hepatitis B virus, the presence of anti-HBs in a hep b surface ab is not a definite indicator of recovery from hepatitis B infection or immunity from future infection. It has been reported that a patient can have antibodies to one surface antigen type while being acutely infected with a virus of a different subtype, implying that the individual has both HBsAg and anti-HBs. Tests on people who have had blood transfusions or haemophiliacs who have received plasma components may produce false-positive results for antibodies to the hepatitis B surface antigen.
