Luteinizing Hormone (LH)

Luteinizing Hormone (LH)

Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed

This test determines the concentration of luteinizing hormone (LH) in your blood. The pituitary gland, a small gland located beneath the brain, produces LH. LH is essential for sexual development and functioning.

  • LH regulates the menstrual cycle in women. It also causes an egg to be released from the ovary. This is referred to as ovulation. LH levels rapidly increase just before ovulation.
  • In men, LH stimulates the testicles to produce testosterone, which is necessary for sperm production. LH levels in men typically do not change significantly.
  • LH levels in children are typically low in early childhood and begin to rise a few years before the onset of puberty. LH signals the ovaries to produce oestrogen in females. It aids in signalling the testes to produce testosterone in boys.

Infertility (the inability to become pregnant), menstrual difficulties in women, low sex drive in men, and early or delayed puberty in children can all result from too much or too little LH.

Lutropin is also known as interstitial cell stimulating hormone.

What is its purpose?

To control sexual functions, an LH test collaborates with another hormone called follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). As a result, an FSH test is frequently performed in conjunction with an LH test. These tests are administered differently depending on whether you are a woman, a man, or a child.

These tests are most commonly used in women to:

  • Assist in determining the cause of infertility.
  • Learn when ovulation occurs; this is when you are most likely to become pregnant.
  • Determine the cause of irregular or stopped menstrual periods.
  • Confirm the onset of menopause, also known as perimenopause. Menopause is the period in a woman's life when her menstrual periods cease and she is no longer able to become pregnant. It usually begins around the age of 50 for a woman. Perimenopause is the period preceding menopause. It can last for many years. LH testing could be performed near the end of this transition.

These tests are most commonly used in men to:

  • Assist in determining the cause of infertility.
  • Determine the cause of a low sperm count.
  • Determine the cause of your low sex drive.
  • These tests are most commonly used in children to help diagnose early or delayed puberty.
  • Puberty is considered early if it begins before the age of nine in girls and before the age of ten in boys.
  • Puberty is considered delayed if it has not begun by the age of 13 in girls and 14 in boys.

Why do I require an LH test?

If you are a woman, you may require this test if you have:

  • After 12 months of trying, you have been unable to conceive.
  • Your menstrual cycle is erratic.
  • Your menstrual cycle has ended. The test can determine whether you have gone through menopause or are in perimenopause.

If you are a man, you may require this test if you are:

  • After a year of trying, you and your partner have been unable to conceive.
  • Your sexual desire has decreased.

If you have symptoms of a pituitary disorder, both men and women should be tested. Some of these include the symptoms listed above, as well as:

  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Loss of weight
  • Appetite suppression
