Malaria Serology

Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed

Malaria is a dangerous parasitic disease. Parasites are microscopic plants or animals that obtain nutrients by feeding on another creature. Malaria-causing parasites are transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitos. Malaria symptoms may initially resemble those of the flu. Malaria can later cause life-threatening complications.

Malaria is not contagious like the common cold or flu, but mosquitos can spread it from person to person. When a mosquito bites an infected person, it spreads the parasite to anyone else it bites. The parasites will enter your bloodstream if you are bitten by an infected mosquito. The parasites multiply within your red blood cells, causing illness. Malaria tests examine the blood for signs of a malaria infection.

Malaria is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. Millions of people are infected with malaria each year, and hundreds of thousands die as a result of the disease. In Africa, young children account for the majority of malaria deaths. While malaria is found in over 87 countries, the majority of infections and deaths occur in Africa. Malaria is extremely rare in the United States. However, Americans who travel to Africa and other tropical countries are at risk of contracting the disease.

Malaria blood smear, malaria rapid diagnostic test, malaria by PCR are some of the other names for this test.

What do they serve?
Malaria tests are used to determine the presence of malaria. Malaria can usually be cured if it is diagnosed and treated early. Malaria, if left untreated, can cause life-threatening complications such as kidney failure, liver failure, and internal bleeding.

What is the purpose of a malaria test?
If you live in or have recently travelled to a malaria-endemic area and have malaria symptoms, you may require this test. The majority of people will experience symptoms within 14 days of being bitten by an infected mosquito. However, symptoms can appear as soon as seven days after the event or as late as a year later. Malaria symptoms are similar to the flu in the early stages of infection and may include:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Ache in the body
  • Vomiting and nausea

Symptoms in the later stages of infection are more severe and may include:

  • A fever is present.
  • Chills and shivering
  • Convulsions
  • Stools that are bloody
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Seizures
  • Confusion in the mind
