Serum Insulin

Serum Insulin

Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed

This test determines the level of insulin in your blood. Insulin is a hormone that aids in the transport of blood sugar, also known as glucose, from the bloodstream into the cells. Glucose is obtained from the foods and beverages you consume. It is the primary source of energy for your body.

Insulin is critical in maintaining proper glucose levels. Glucose levels that are too high or too low can lead to serious health problems. Non-normal glucose levels are referred to as:

  • Hyperglycemia is defined as abnormally high blood glucose levels. It occurs when your body does not produce enough insulin. Glucose cannot enter your cells if there is insufficient insulin. Instead, it remains in the bloodstream.
  • Hypoglycemia is defined as low blood glucose levels. If your body releases too much insulin into your bloodstream, too much glucose enters your cells. This results in less waste in the bloodstream.

The most common cause of abnormal glucose levels is diabetes. Diabetes is classified into two types.

  • Diabetes Type 1. When you have type 1 diabetes, your body produces little or no insulin. This can result in hyperglycemia.
  • Diabetes Type 2. If you have type 2 diabetes, your body may still be able to produce insulin, but your cells do not respond well to it and cannot easily absorb enough glucose from your blood. This is known as insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance is a common precursor to type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance initially causes the body to produce extra insulin to compensate for ineffective insulin. Hypoglycemia can be caused by an excess of insulin in the bloodstream. However, insulin resistance tends to worsen over time. It eventually reduces your body's ability to produce insulin. Blood sugar levels rise as insulin levels fall. If your levels do not return to normal, you could develop type 2 diabetes.

Other names for insulin include fasting insulin, insulin serum, total insulin, and free insulin.

What is its purpose?

An insulin in blood test is typically used to:

  • Determine the cause of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Insulin resistance can be diagnosed or monitored.
  • People with type 2 diabetes should have their health monitored.
  • Find out if you have an insulinoma, a type of pancreatic tumour. If the tumour has been removed, the test may be used to determine whether or not the procedure was successful.
  • An insulin in blood test is sometimes used in conjunction with other tests to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of type 1 diabetes. Other tests that may be performed include glucose and hemoglobin AIC testing.

Why do I require an insulin blood test?

If you have hypoglycemia symptoms, you may require an insulin in blood test (low blood sugar). These are some examples:

  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Heartbeat irregularity
  • Confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Vision impairment
  • Hunger at its peak
