An imaging method called a fetal ultrasound (sonogram) uses sound waves to create images of a fetus inside the womb. Your doctor can monitor your pregnancy and assess your baby's growth and development using fetal ultrasound images. Fetal ultrasonography may occasionally be used to assess potential issues or support a diagnosis.
The first fetal ultrasound is usually done during the first trimester to confirm the pregnancy and estimate how long you've been pregnant. The next ultrasound is normally provided in the second trimester of your pregnancy, when anatomical details are visible, if your pregnancy is still simple. A second ultrasound or further imaging exams, such an MRI, may be advised if a problem is detected.
