A buildup of fluid under the skin at the back of a baby's neck is known as nuchal translucency (NT).
There is fluid at the back of every developing baby's neck. But many infants with Down syndrome have more than usual. This is why the NT scan is employed to aid in the detection of Down's syndrome.
In the first trimester, doctors also check for the fetal nasal bone (NB). The chance of chromosomal problems increases if the developing fetus lacks a nasal bone.
