Males have acid phosphatase in their prostate glands. The acid phosphatase enzyme found in the male prostate gland is 100 times greater than found in the body. When a gland develops cancer, the phosphatase enzyme level rises. This test is used to diagnose the cancer level. Prostatic acid phosphatase is the enzyme found in the prostate gland.
Prostate acid phosphatase or serum acid phosphatase test measures the enzyme in the blood serum.
Why Done?
This test can detect prostate cancer. In patients with established prostate cancer, an increase in PAP levels may signal tumor development or return of the disease.
Because the seminal fluid is high in acid phosphatase, an acid phosphatase test for female can be performed on a vaginal swab in rape cases.
