Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) are detected in your blood by an ANA test. Your immune system normally produces antibodies to aid in the fight against infection. Antinuclear antibodies, on the other hand, frequently attack your own tissues, specifically targeting the nucleus of each cell.
A positive ANA test, in most cases, indicates that your immune system has launched an unintentional attack on your own tissue, also known as an autoimmune reaction. However, some people have positive ANA tests even when they are otherwise healthy.
If you have a suspected autoimmune disease such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or scleroderma, your doctor will most likely order an ANA test.
