Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
Specifically for bowel cancer, the effectiveness of treatment is evaluated using a carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) test.
Some cancers create proteins called carcinoembryonic antigens.
The body creates antibodies in reaction to the antigens to aid in fighting them.
Following surgery, a CEA test is frequently performed to assess carcinoembryonic antigen levels.
In addition to serving as a helpful indicator for colon cancer, CEA tests can also be used to evaluate other cancer types, such as:
- lung cancer
- breast cancer
- liver cancer
- pancreatic cancer
- stomach cancer
- ovarian cancer
In non-cancerous illnesses such liver disease and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), CEA levels can also increase.
