Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
The DHEA sulphate (DHEAS) levels in your blood are determined by this test. Dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate is referred to as DHEAS. A male sex hormone called DHEAS is present in both men and women. DHEAS is crucial in the production of the sex hormones oestrogen and testosterone in both men and women. Additionally, it plays a role in the maturation of male sexual traits during puberty.
The adrenal glands, two little glands found above your kidneys, are where DHEAS is mostly produced. Heart rate, blood pressure, and other bodily processes are under their control. The testicles of a man and the ovaries of a woman produce less DHEAS. If your DHEAS levels are abnormal, it could indicate that your adrenal glands or sex organs are malfunctioning (testicles or ovaries.)
DHEAS, DHEA-S, DHEA, DHEA-SO4, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate are some of its alternate names.
What does it serve?
Most frequently, a DHEA sulphate (DHEAS) test is used to:
- Check to see if your adrenal glands are functioning properly.
- determine the presence of adrenal gland tumours
- Identify the testicles and ovaries' ailments.
- find out why boys experience early puberty
Find out what causes women's and girls' development of masculine traits and excessive body hair growth.
In addition to other sex hormone assays, a DHEAS test is frequently performed. These include testing for oestrogen in women and testosterone in men.
Why do I need to test for DHEA sulphate?
If you have symptoms of either high or low DHEA sulphate levels, this test might be necessary (DHEAS). Men who have high amounts of DHEAS may not exhibit any symptoms. In women and girls, excessive DHEAS levels might cause the following symptoms:
- excessive growth of body and face hair
- voice getting louder
- irregular menstrual periods
- Acne
- an increase in muscle mass
- loss of hair on the top of the head
Babies who have genitalia that are not distinctly male or female may also require testing (ambiguous genitalia). If a boy exhibits symptoms of early puberty, this test may be necessary.
The following indicators of an adrenal gland dysfunction could be markers of low DHEAS levels:
- Unaccounted-for weight loss
- nausea and diarrhoea
- Dizziness
- Dehydration
- want for salt
Other aging-related symptoms of decreased DHEAS may include:
- reduced sex desire
- Male erectile dysfunction
- female vaginal tissues that are thinner
