The Coombs test looks for antibodies that may adhere to your red blood cells and cause them to die prematurely.
Why is the Test Performed?
The direct Coombs test is used to identify antibodies on the surface of red blood cells. This can be caused by a variety of diseases and drugs. These antibodies can sometimes destroy red blood cells, resulting in anaemia. If you have signs or symptoms of anaemia or jaundice, your doctor may recommend this test (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
