Although most fungi (particularly yeasts) and some parasites, such as Strongyloides and Trichomonas, will also show up stained with the Gram stain, it is generally utilised as a differential stain for bacteria. On direct smears of clinical specimens as well as on smears from cultures, the Gram stain method is frequently used.
