Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Test

Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Test

Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed

This test determines the concentration of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in your blood. The pituitary gland, a small gland located beneath the brain, produces FSH. FSH is essential for sexual development and function.

  • In women, FSH regulates the menstrual cycle and stimulates egg growth in the ovaries. FSH levels in women fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle, with the highest levels occurring just before the ovary releases an egg. This is referred to as ovulation.
  • FSH aids in the regulation of sperm production in men. FSH levels in men typically do not fluctuate significantly.
  • FSH levels in children are typically low until puberty, when they begin to rise. It aids in signalling the ovaries to produce oestrogen in females. It aids in signalling the testes to produce testosterone in boys.

Infertility (the inability to become pregnant), menstrual difficulties in women, low sex drive in men, and early or delayed puberty in children can all be caused by too much or too little FSH.

What is its purpose?

To control sexual functions, FSH collaborates with another hormone called luteinizing hormone. As a result, a luteinizing hormone test is frequently performed in conjunction with an FSH test. These tests are administered differently depending on whether you are a woman, a man, or a child.

In women, these tests are most commonly used to:

  • Determine the cause of infertility;
  • Determine if there is a problem with ovarian function;
  • Determine the cause of irregular or stopped menstrual periods; and
  • Confirm the onset of menopause, or perimenopause. Menopause is the period in a woman's life when her menstrual periods cease and she is no longer able to become pregnant. It usually begins around the age of 50 for a woman. Perimenopause is the period preceding menopause. It can last for many years. FSH testing could be performed near the end of this transition.

These tests are most commonly used in men to:

  • Determine the cause of infertility
  • Determine the cause of a low sperm count
  • Determine whether there is a problem with the testicles.
  • These tests are most commonly used in children to help diagnose early or delayed puberty.
  • Puberty is considered early if it begins before the age of 9 in girls and before the age of 10 in boys.
  • Puberty is considered delayed if it does not begin by the age of 13 in girls and 14 in boys.

What is the purpose of an FSH level test?

If you are a woman, you may require this test if you have been unable to conceive after 12 months of trying.

  • You have an irregular menstrual cycle;
  • Your periods have stopped. The test can determine whether you have gone through menopause or are in perimenopause.

 If you are a man, you may require this test if you have not been able to get your partner pregnant after 12 months of trying or if your sex drive has decreased.If you have symptoms of a pituitary disorder, both men and women should be tested. Some of these include the symptoms listed above, as well as:

  • Tiredness
  • Weakness
  • Weight loss
  • Appetite suppression
