Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
A G6PD test is a blood test used to determine G6PD levels. G6PD is an abbreviation for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. G6PD is an enzyme (protein) that aids in the proper functioning of your red blood cells.
If your doctor suspects you don't have enough G6PD, he or she may order a G6PD test (G6PD deficiency). G6PD deficiency is a genetic disorder characterised by low red blood cell counts (anemia).
When is a G6PD test required?
If you have symptoms of hemolytic anaemia, you may be subjected to a G6PD test (hemolytic symptoms). Unless you interact with a trigger, you usually do not develop hemolytic symptoms. Among the causes of hemolytic symptoms are:
- Infections caused by bacteria or viruses.
- The fava beans (favism).
- Antibiotics, anti-malarial medications, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are examples of medications (NSAIDs).
The following symptoms may indicate hemolytic anaemia:
- Fainting (syncope).
- Fatigue.
- A fast heartbeat (heart palpitations).
- Breathing difficulty (dyspnea).
- Urine that is red or brown in colour.
- Skin that has been washed or is pale.
- Skin or eye discoloration (jaundice).
