Gamma GT

Gamma GT

Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed

The amount of GGT in the blood is measured by a gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) test. GGT is an enzyme found all over the body, but it is most prevalent in the liver. GGT may leak into the bloodstream if the liver is damaged. High levels of GGT in the blood may indicate liver disease or bile duct damage. Bile ducts are tubes that transport bile to and from the liver. Bile is a liquid produced by the liver. It is necessary for digestion.

A GGT test cannot determine the cause of liver disease. As a result, it is usually performed alongside or after other liver function tests, most commonly an alkaline phosphatase (ALP) test. Another type of liver enzyme is ALP. It is frequently used to aid in the diagnosis of bone disorders as well as liver disease.

Other names for this enzyme include GGTP, Gamma-GT, and GTP.

What is its purpose?
A GGT test is commonly used to:

  • Assist in diagnosing liver disease
  • Determine whether the liver damage is the result of a liver disease or a bone disorder.
  • Examine the bile ducts for obstructions.
  • Alcohol use disorder should be screened for and monitored.

Why do I require a GGT test?
If you have symptoms of liver disease, you may require a GGT test. Among the symptoms are:

  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Jaundice is a condition in which your skin and eyes turn yellow.
  • Appetite loss
  • Pain or swelling in the abdomen
  • Vomiting and nausea
