Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed

The hemoglobin A1c test determines your average blood sugar level over the previous 2 to 3 months. It is also known as the HbA1c test, the glycated hemoglobin test, and glycohemoglobin. It's similar to a baseball player's batting average for the season. A single game does not provide information about a player's career performance. Furthermore, one day's worth of test results does not provide an accurate picture of how your treatment works.

Diabetes patients require this test on a regular basis to ensure that their levels remain within normal limits. It can tell you if you need to change your diabetes medications. Diabetes is also diagnosed using the A1c test.

What is the purpose of a HbA1c test?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults over the age of 45 be tested for diabetes and prediabetes. If your results are normal, you should have the test repeated every three years. If your test results indicate that you have prediabetes, you should be tested every 1-2 years. You should also speak with your doctor about taking steps to reduce your risk of developing diabetes.

If you are under the age of 45 and have certain risk factors, you may require this test. These are some examples:

  • Obesity or being overweight
  • Blood pressure is high.
  • A family history of heart disease
  • Inactivity physically

Testing should be performed every three years, and more frequently if your results indicate that you have prediabetes.

If you have diabetes symptoms, you may also require a HbA1c test. These are some examples:

  • heightened thirst
  • Urination has increased.
  • Vision impairment
  • Fatigue
