Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
Hepatitis A is a potentially fatal liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). When the body becomes infected with HAV, it defends itself by producing two types of antibodies in sequence: IgM, which appears 2 to 4 weeks after infection and lasts 2 to 6 months, and IgG, which appears a few weeks after IgM and lasts the rest of the person's life. IgG provides long-term immunity (protection), whether from prior virus infection or vaccination. Total HAV antibodies (IgG plus IgM) testing is especially useful in confirming an individual's long-term immunity and the efficacy of vaccination. The specific anti-HAV IgM test is primarily used to determine the cause of acute or recent liver disease.
