Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
An antistreptolysin O titer (ASO) is a blood test that determines whether you have recently been infected with group A streptococcus bacteria. It is not used to detect an active strep infection, such as strep throat. Instead, this test is primarily used if your doctor suspects that you have symptoms caused by an untreated previous strep infection.
What Is the Purpose of an Antistreptolysin O Titer?
If you have a strep infection, it will most likely be cleared up with antibiotics. However, if it does not cause symptoms or is not completely treated, you may develop secondary complications. If your doctor suspects you have one of the following complications, you may need an ASO titer blood test.
Infections. Strep bacteria can spread to other parts of your body if not treated properly. Infections in your tonsils, sinuses, skin, middle ear, and blood can result from this.
Scarlet fever This is most common in children aged five to fifteen. Scarlet fever was once thought to be a serious childhood illness. It can now be treated with antibiotics, but if not treated, it can lead to complications. Scarlet fever symptoms include:
- A sunburn-like red rash that feels like sandpaper
- The presence of red lines around the groyne, armpits, elbows, knees, and neck.
- Face flushed with a pale ring around the mouth
Rheumatoid arthritis : This is not an infection, but rather an inflammatory immune response. It does not spread. Doctors believe it's an immune reaction to a previous strep or scarlet fever infection. Rheumatic fever is a potentially fatal condition that affects your heart, joints, brain, and skin. Rheumatic fever symptoms can include:
- Knees, ankles, elbows, and wrists that are painful and tender
- Fever
- Heart symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, and an irregular heartbeat.
- Tiredness
- Jerking uncontrollably
- Lumps under the skin near the joints, though this is uncommon Rash of pink rings with a clear centre, also uncommon
Glomerulonephritis. This is a specific type of kidney disease. It harms the glomeruli, which are tiny filters inside your kidneys. It can make it difficult for your kidneys to remove waste and fluid from your body. Serious cases may result in kidney failure. You may not have any glomerulonephritis symptoms. If you do have symptoms, they could be as follows:
- Urine with blood
- Tiredness
- Nausea Rash
- Blood pressure is high.
- Joint or abdominal discomfort
- Peeing less or more frequently than usual
- Urine that is foamy
- Swelling in your joints or face
