Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
To detect HIV infection, the most common HIV tests use blood. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) detects antibodies in a patient's blood sample. An ELISA can also be performed using oral fluid (not saliva) collected from the cheeks and gums. Oral fluid ELISA tests are as sensitive as blood tests. An ELISA can also be performed with a urine sample, but it is less accurate than a blood or oral fluid test. To make a positive diagnosis, a positive (reactive) ELISA for all samples must be combined with a follow-up (confirmatory) test, such as the Western blot test. Although false negative or false positive results are extremely rare, they may occur if the patient has not yet developed HIV antibodies or if a laboratory error occurred. ELISA tests are 99.9% accurate when used in conjunction with the confirmatory Western blot test.
