A Pap test, commonly known as a Pap smear, is a treatment used to check women for cervical cancer.
Cells from your cervix, which is the lower, narrow end of your uterus that is at the top of your vagina, are collected for a Pap smear.
You have a better chance of being cured if cervical cancer is found early thanks to a Pap smear. A Pap smear can also identify alterations in your cervical cells that point to the potential emergence of cancer. You can prevent cervical cancer from developing by first identifying these abnormal cells with a Pap smear.
Why is it done?
Cervical cancer is screened for using a Pap smear.
Typically, a pelvic exam is performed in addition to the Pap smear. The Pap test may be paired with an HPV test for women older than 30. HPV is a prevalent sexually transmitted infection that can result in cervical cancer. A Pap smear may not always be performed; instead, the HPV test may be.
Who needs to get a Pap smear?
When you should start having Pap tests and how frequently you should do so are decisions that you and your doctor can make together.
Generally speaking, doctors advise starting Pap testing around age 21.
