Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
The lupus anticoagulant test is a blood test that looks for antibodies that cause clotting problems. Antibodies are blood proteins that fight bacteria, viruses, and other germs.
This test's name is misleading because it does not screen for lupus. Lupus, also known as systemic lupus erythematosus, is an autoimmune disease in which your immune system attacks and inflames your tissues. This condition can cause joint pain, rashes, and fatigue.
A lupus anticoagulant test is also known as:
- Panel of anticoagulants for Lupus
- Lupus suppressor
- Test for diluted russell viper venom
- Test for modified russell viper venom
- LA sensitivity
Who Should Take the Exam?
The lupus anticoagulant antibody is present in approximately 50% of people with lupus. Approximately half of these people will develop a blood clot during their lifetime. This antibody can be found in people who do not have lupus. It is estimated that between 2% and 4% of the population has it. It occurs more frequently in older people, women, and during pregnancy. If you have unexplained blood clots, your doctor will order this test.
- You have lupus and symptoms of a blood clot.
- A blood test reveals that your blood clots slowly.
- You've had several miscarriages.
