Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
A urine microalbumin test looks for very low concentrations of the blood protein albumin. When a person is at risk of developing kidney disease, a microalbumin test is performed to look for early indications of kidney impairment.
Your kidneys should be able to filter out waste from your blood while preserving the beneficial elements, such as albumin-containing proteins. Proteins can escape your body through damaged kidneys and end up in your urine. One of the first proteins to leak when the kidneys are injured is albumin (al-BYOO-min).
For those at a higher risk of developing kidney disease, such as those with diabetes or high blood pressure, microalbumin testing are advised.
Why is it done?
A urine microalbumin test may be advised by your doctor to look for early indicators of kidney impairment. More advanced renal disease may be avoided or delayed with treatment.
Your risk of kidney impairment and any underlying disorders will determine how frequently you need microalbumin tests. For instance:
diabetes type 1. Your doctor might advise a microalbumin test once per year starting five years after your type 1 diabetes diagnosis if you have it.
diabetes type 2. Your doctor could advise a microalbumin test once a year starting right after your type 2 diabetes diagnosis if you have it.
High blood pressure Your doctor could advise more frequent microalbumin testing if you have high blood pressure. Consult your doctor about how frequently to repeat this test.
If the level of urine microalbumin is high, your doctor might advise treatment and more frequent testing.
