Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
The microfilaria test is used to detect and identify microfilaria in blood. Because microfilaria appear at night, this test is carried out at a specific time of day or night.
The larvae of parasitic nematodes are referred to as microfilaria. (Late larval stage) These larvae are released into the bloodstream by adult parasites. As a result, any infected person will have embryonic larvae. Elephantiasis, loa loa filariasis, and river blindness are all diseases caused by these parasites.
Blood is collected from suspected patients via earlobe, venous blood, or finger prick. There are several methods for detecting the presence of these parasites in the body. These tests include thin blood smear, thick blood smear, quantitative blood count, and membrane filtration.
What is the purpose of a microfilaria parasite test?
Lymphatic filariasis causes abnormal swelling of body parts and severe pain in those areas. Severe disability follows, and it is associated with a social stigma. The microfilaria test is a diagnostic test that can help provide clear evidence of filarial infection. It also helps to know the size and morphology of the larvae, which aids in species identification. This contributes to better treatment.
