Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
A phosphate in blood test determines how much phosphate is in your blood. Phosphate is a mineral that is electrically charged and contains phosphorus. Phosphorus collaborates with calcium to build strong bones and teeth.
The kidneys normally filter and remove excess phosphate from the blood. If your blood phosphate levels are abnormally high or low, it could indicate kidney disease or another serious condition.
Other names for this test include phosphorus test, P, PO4, and phosphorus-serum.
What is its purpose?
A phosphate in blood test can be used to determine:
- Diagnosis and monitoring of kidney and bone disorders
- Recognize and treat parathyroid disorders. The parathyroid glands are small glands in the neck. They manufacture hormones that regulate the amount of calcium in the blood. If the gland produces too many or too few of these hormones, it can lead to serious health problems.
A phosphate in blood test is sometimes ordered in conjunction with calcium and other mineral tests.
What is the purpose of a phosphate in blood test?
If you have symptoms of kidney disease or a parathyroid disorder, you may require this test. These are some examples:
- Fatigue
- Cramps in the muscles
- Bone ache
However, many people with these disorders do not exhibit symptoms. So, if your provider suspects you have kidney disease based on your medical history and the results of calcium tests, he or she may order a phosphate test. Because calcium and phosphate work in tandem, calcium levels can indicate phosphate levels as well. Calcium testing is frequently performed as part of a routine checkup.
