Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
To determine whether a pathogenic organism is present in a sample of pus, a test is performed on the pus sample. A sample is cultured to identify any bacteria or fungi that may be present. A sensitivity test is carried out to determine what type of medication (such as an antibiotic) will prevent the organism from growing and aid in the treatment of the infection. Pus culture involves mixing a sample of pus with a material that encourages the growth of microorganisms. The culture is deemed negative if no bacteria appear to be growing. On the other side, the culture is termed to be positive if the bacteria that can cause infection thrive. Chemical tests or a microscope may be used to determine the type of microbe. In a culture, bacteria typically develop quickly (in about two days), although other microbes, such fungi, can take longer. On other bodily fluids as well, a culture and sensitivity test can be performed.
