Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
The quad screen, often referred to as the quadruple marker test, second trimester screen, or just the quad test, is a prenatal test that assesses the blood levels of four chemicals in expectant mothers:
- Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a hormone produced by the placenta, and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), a protein produced by the growing child
- The liver of the foetus and the placenta produce the hormone estriol.
- Another hormone produced by the placenta is inhibin A.
- The ideal time to perform the quad screen is between weeks 15 and 18, or during the second trimester. The surgery can be carried out up till week 22, though.
The quad screen is used to determine whether certain diseases, such Down syndrome or neural tube abnormalities, have a higher likelihood of affecting your pregnancy. The quad screen can reassure you that your chances of developing Down syndrome, trisomy 18, neural tube problems, and abdominal wall defects is low.
You can think about conducting extra screening or testing if the quad screen reveals a higher likelihood of one of these disorders.
