Red Blood Count (RBC Test)
Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
An RBC count is a blood test that determines the number of red blood cells (RBCs) in your body.
Hemoglobin, which transports oxygen, is found in RBCs. The amount of oxygen delivered to your body tissues is determined by the number of RBCs you have and how well they function.
Why is the Test Performed?
A complete blood count (CBC) test almost always includes an RBC count.
The test can assist in the diagnosis of various types of anaemia (low RBC count) and other conditions affecting red blood cells.
Other conditions that may necessitate an RBC count include:
- A disease that damages the blood vessels in the kidneys (Alport syndrome)
- Waldenström macroglobulinemia (cancer of white blood cells)
- A condition in which red blood cells degrade faster than usual (paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria)
- Scar tissue replaces the marrow in a bone marrow disorder (myelofibrosis)
