A stool sample test called stool (or faecal) reducing substances is used to identify lactose intolerance (and some rare metabolic abnormalities). A protracted or severe case of viral gastroenteritis may result in lactose intolerance.
What would make a stool-reducing substance test necessary?
If you experience symptoms of lactose intolerance, such as frequent loose stools, especially if they are frothy, your doctor may prescribe faecal reduction agents.
Due to a compromised intestinal lining, lactose intolerance may develop following a protracted episode of viral gastroenteritis.
A positive result on a test for lowering sugars in the stool might also result from other disorders where other sugars, such as glucose, galactose, and fructose, are not absorbed adequately.
