SGPT Test

SGPT Test

Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed

It is a straightforward blood test that measures SGPT levels in the blood. SGPT is an abbreviation for serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase. It is also known as ALT (alanine aminotransferase).

In that both enzymes are associated with liver parenchymal cells, ALT is similar to aspartate transaminase (AST). ALT can be found in plasma and various body tissues, but it is most commonly found in the liver. It catalyses the first and second steps of the alanine cycle. As biomarkers for liver health, serum ALT, AST (aspartate transaminase), and their ratio (AST/ALT ratio) are commonly measured clinically.

The ALT blood test is used to detect liver damage in a variety of conditions.

ALT aids in the conversion of food into energy. ALT levels are low in healthy people, but ALT levels in the blood rise when the liver is damaged.

Why is the SGPT test recommended?
This test may be requested by your healthcare provider to look for liver damage caused by medications, diseases, or injury such as:

High levels can be found in:

  • Viral hepatitis, liver damage, and bile duct diseases are all possibilities.
  • Diabetes, heart failure, etc.
  • Drugs like zileuton, omega-3 acid ethyl esters, anti-inflammatory medications, antibiotics, cholesterol medications, some antipsychotics like risperidone, and anticonvulsants, among others.
  • Reye syndrome, infectious mononucleosis

This test is also used to monitor the response to liver disease treatment. It is also performed as a routine test as part of a health checkup.
