Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
Bilirubin testing determines the amount of bilirubin in your blood. Bilirubin (bil-ih-ROO-bin) is a yellowish pigment produced naturally during the breakdown of red blood cells. Bilirubin is excreted from the body after passing through the liver.
Bilirubin levels that are higher than normal may indicate various types of liver or bile duct problems. Higher bilirubin levels can occasionally be caused by an increased rate of red blood cell destruction (hemolysis).
Why is it done?
Bilirubin testing is typically performed as part of a battery of tests to assess the health of your liver. Bilirubin testing can be performed on:
- Investigate jaundice, a yellowing of the skin and eyes caused by high bilirubin levels. This test is commonly used to check for infant jaundice by measuring bilirubin levels in newborns.
- Determine whether your bile ducts, either in the liver or the gallbladder, are blocked.
- Aid in the detection or monitoring of liver disease, particularly hepatitis.
- Assist in the evaluation of anaemia caused by the destruction of red blood cells.
- Assist in tracking the effectiveness of a treatment.
- Assist in the evaluation of a suspected drug toxicity.
Some common tests that may be performed concurrently with bilirubin testing include
- Liver function tests : Blood tests that measure the levels of specific enzymes or proteins in your blood.
- Total protein and albumin : Albumin and total protein levels indicate how well your liver is producing proteins that your body requires to fight infections and perform other functions.
- Complete blood count : This test measures a variety of blood components and characteristics.
- Prothrombin Time : This test determines the plasma clotting time.
