Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
A ferritin test determines the level of ferritin in your blood. Ferritin is an iron-containing blood protein. A ferritin test tells your doctor how much iron your body has stored.
If a ferritin test shows that your blood ferritin level is lower than normal, it means that your body's iron stores are depleted and you have iron deficiency. As a result, you may become anemic.
If your ferritin levels are higher than normal, you may have a condition that causes your body to store too much iron. It could also indicate liver disease, rheumatoid arthritis, other inflammatory disorders, or hyperthyroidism. Some cancers can also cause an increase in blood ferritin levels.
Why is it done?
A ferritin test may be recommended if your doctor suspects you have too much or too little iron in your body. The test can detect or suggest:
- Anemia due to iron deficiency
- Hemochromatosis is a condition in which your body absorbs an excessive amount of iron from the food you eat.
- Disease of the Liver
- Still's disease in adults
If you've been diagnosed with a disorder that causes an excess of iron in your body, such as hemochromatosis, your doctor may also recommend a ferritin test.
