Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
Folate is an essential nutrient for the production of normal red blood cells as well as the repair of cells and nerve tissue in the body. It is tested, along with vitamin B12, to see if you have enough of these vitamins in your blood.
What exactly is being tested?
Folate is a nutrient that is closely related to folic acid, also known as vitamin B9.
Folate is commonly found in foods such as green vegetables, fruit, dry beans and peas, and a variety of breakfast cereals. Folic acid is added to bread, flour, and cereals because it is so important in normal growth, particularly in developing babies.
This test looks at the levels of folate in the blood (serum folate) or red blood cells (RBC folate).
Why would I require this examination?
A folate test may be required for a variety of reasons, including:
- Low folate levels can cause red blood cells to develop abnormally or fail to produce enough (anaemia).
- The test can be used to determine the cause of your nerve damage.
- Some diseases, such as Crohn's disease or cystic fibrosis, prevent the body from absorbing folate.
- Some people who are confused and disoriented are deficient in folate.
- Your doctor may be keeping an eye on your treatment for low folate or vitamin B12.
