Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
The fructosamine test for diabetes is a blood test that measures average blood glucose levels over the previous two or three weeks. While it is similar to the haemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) test, which measures average blood sugar over the previous two to four months, it is not as widely used. Its shorter time frame is insufficient for determining a long-term prognosis.
Instead of glycated haemoglobin, the fructosamine test measures glycated protein in the blood in addition to glucose. Sugar molecules in blood bind to proteins. Because these proteins circulate in the bloodstream for 14 to 21 days, measuring them gives you an idea of how much sugar is in your blood during that time period.
The Test's Purpose
The fructosamine test, unlike the A1C test, is not used as a screening test for people who do not have diabetes or who have well-controlled diabetes.
Instead, the fructosamine test may be used in cases where the A1C test is not reliable. As an example:
- You've experienced blood loss or hemolytic anaemia. (Because of the rapid turnover of your red blood cells, a haemoglobin A1C test result will be incorrectly low.)
- You have sickle cell anaemia or another type of haemoglobin.
- You have another condition that may have an impact on HbA1c reliability, such as kidney failure (end-stage renal disease), liver disease, HIV infection, or having recently received blood transfusions.
The fructosamine test is also used when your doctor needs more information than another test can provide. It may be used in particular if you've recently changed your medications or insulin, as it can help gauge the effectiveness of the new treatments after only a few weeks. The test can also be used during pregnancy, when your body is constantly changing.
