Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
A sodium blood test determines how much sodium is in your blood. Electrolytes include sodium. Electrolytes are minerals that are electrically charged. They help regulate the amount of fluid in your body as well as the balance of acids and bases (pH balance). Sodium also aids in the proper functioning of your nerves and muscles.
Your diet provides the majority of the sodium you require. If you consume too much sodium, your kidneys excrete it in your urine. Normally, your body maintains a very narrow range of sodium levels. If your sodium blood levels are abnormally high or low, you may have a kidney problem, dehydration, or another medical condition.
What is its purpose?
A sodium blood test is a simple test that can be used to assess your overall health. It can be used to detect and monitor conditions that affect your body's fluid, electrolyte, and acidity balance.
The test is frequently performed as part of a battery of tests known as an electrolyte panel. It may also be included in two other types of tests known as a basic metabolic panel (BMP) and a comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) (CMP)
What is the purpose of a sodium blood test?
A sodium blood test may be ordered by your doctor as part of a routine checkup or if you take medication that can affect your fluid balance. This test may also be ordered if you have symptoms of too much or too little sodium in your blood.
High sodium levels (hypernatremia) cause the following symptoms:
- Thirst
- Urinating (peeing) There was very little vomiting.
- Diarrhea
- Confusion
- twitching of muscles
- Seizures
- Without treatment, extremely high sodium levels can cause a coma and even death.
Symptoms of hyponatremia (low sodium levels) include:
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- Confusion
- Seizures caused by muscle twitching
- Without treatment, extremely low sodium levels can cause a coma and even death.
