Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
The toxoplasma blood test looks for antibodies to the parasite Toxoplasma gondii in the blood.
Why is the Test Performed?
When your doctor suspects you have toxoplasmosis, he or she will order the test. If a pregnant woman becomes infected, the infection poses a risk to her unborn child. It is also harmful to people who have HIV/AIDS.
The test is performed on pregnant women to:
- Check to see if a woman is currently infected or has had an infection in the past.
- Examine the baby to see if he or she has the infection.
Antibodies present before pregnancy are likely to protect a developing baby from toxoplasmosis at birth. However, antibodies that develop during pregnancy may indicate that both the mother and the baby are infected. This infection increases the risk of miscarriage or birth defects during pregnancy.
This test can also be performed if you have:
- Unknown cause of lymph node swelling
- An unexplained increase in blood white cell (lymphocyte) count HIV and symptoms of brain toxoplasmosis (including headache, seizures, weakness, and speech or vision problems)
- Back part of the eye inflammation (chorioretinitis)
