Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
A troponin test determines the amount of troponin in your blood. Troponin is a type of protein found in the heart muscles. Troponin is a protein that is not normally found in the blood. Troponin is released into the bloodstream when heart muscles are damaged. As heart damage worsens, more troponin is released into the bloodstream.
Troponin levels in the blood may indicate that you are having or have recently had a heart attack. A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is obstructed. This occlusion can be fatal. However, prompt diagnosis and treatment can save your life.
Other names for cardiac troponin I (cTnI), cardiac troponin T (cTnT), cardiac troponin (cTN), cardiac-specific troponin I (cTnI), and troponin T (cTnT).
What is its purpose?
This test is most commonly used to detect a heart attack. It is sometimes used to monitor angina, a condition that causes chest pain by limiting blood flow to the heart. Angina can sometimes result in a heart attack.
This test may also be used if you have been diagnosed with a heart attack and are being treated in a hospital. Typically, testing is repeated twice or more in a 24-hour period. This is done to see if the troponin levels change over time.
Why do I need a troponin test?
You may need this test if you have been admitted to the emergency room with symptoms of a heart attack. These symptoms include:
- Chest pain or discomfort
- Pain in other parts of the body, including your arm, back, jaw, or neck
- Trouble breathing
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Sweating
