This test determines the level of uric acid in your blood or urine. Uric acid is a natural waste product produced by the body when purines are broken down. Purines are compounds found in your own cells as well as in some foods. Purine-rich foods include liver, anchovies, sardines, dried beans, and beer.
The majority of uric acid dissolves in your blood and then travels to your kidneys. It then exits the body through your urine. When your body produces too much uric acid or does not release enough into your urine, crystals can form in your joints. Gout is the medical term for this condition. Gout is a type of arthritis that causes painful inflammation of the joints and surrounding tissues. High uric acid levels can also lead to other problems, such as kidney stones and kidney failure.
Other names include serum urate and uric acid: serum and urine.
What is its purpose?
A uric acid test is commonly used to:
- Assist in gout diagnosis
- Assist in determining the cause of frequent kidney stones.
- People undergoing certain cancer treatments should have their uric acid levels checked.
- Chemotherapy and radiation therapy can cause excessive uric acid levels in the blood.
What is the purpose of a uric acid test?
If you have gout symptoms, you may also require a uric acid test. These are some examples:
- Joint pain and/or swelling, particularly in the big toe, ankle, or knee
- Skin that is reddish and shiny around the joints
- Joints that are warm to the touch
This test may also be required if you have symptoms of a kidney stone. These are some examples:
- Sharp abdominal, side, or groyne pains
- Back ache
- You have blood in your urine.
- Urge to urinate frequently
- Urinary discomfort
- Urine that is cloudy or stinks
- Vomiting and nausea
