The Widal test is a simple way to diagnose typhoid fever. Typhoid is a potentially fatal disease caused by the bacteria Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi. Typhoid symptoms appear 8 to 48 hours after bacterial infection (S. typhi) and last 2 to 5 days. Georges Ferdinand Widal pioneered the Widal test method in 1896. Agglutination occurs when typhoid bacilli are mixed with serum containing typhoid antibodies from a patient with typhoid fever. This indicates that Salmonella typhi is present.
Why is a Widal Test (Typhoid test) required?
When a doctor suspects typhoid fever, he may recommend the Widal test. This test can quickly determine whether you have enteric or typhoid fever. If a person has fever, chills, fatigue, headache, abdominal pain, constipation, weight loss, and rash spots, a doctor may recommend the Widal test.
