Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
An imaging test called a barium swallow, commonly known as an esophagogram, looks for issues in your upper GI tract. The mouth, esophagus, stomach, and first segment of the small intestine make up your upper GI tract. Fluoroscopy is a specialized form of x-ray that is used in the test. Internal organs are visible moving in real time during fluoroscopy. In order to pass the test, you must also consume a barium-containing liquid with a chalky taste. Barium is a chemical that enhances the visibility of certain body parts on x-rays.
Other terms are esophagram, upper gastrointestinal series, and swallowing study.
