Pre test Information : No Special Preparation Needed
A complete cholesterol test, also known as a lipid panel or lipid profile, is a blood test that determines the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood.
A cholesterol test can help determine your risk of fatty deposit buildup (plaques) in your arteries, which can result in narrowed or blocked arteries throughout your body (atherosclerosis).A cholesterol test is a valuable tool.
High cholesterol levels are frequently a major risk factor for coronary artery disease.
Why is it done?
Typically, high cholesterol produces no signs or symptoms. A complete cholesterol test is performed to determine if your cholesterol is high and to estimate your risk of heart attacks, other types of heart disease, and blood vessel diseases.
A complete cholesterol test calculates four types of fats in your blood:
- Total Cholesterol : his is the total amount of cholesterol in your blood.
- LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol : This is referred to as "bad" cholesterol. Too much of it in your blood causes fatty deposits (plaques) to form in your arteries (atherosclerosis), reducing blood flow. These plaques can rupture and cause a heart attack or stroke.
- HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol : This is known as "good" cholesterol because it aids in the removal of LDL cholesterol, allowing arteries to remain open and blood to flow more freely.
- Triglycerides : Triglycerides are a type of fat found in the bloodstream. When you eat, your body converts excess calories into triglycerides, which are then stored in fat cells. Being overweight, eating too many sweets or drinking too much alcohol, smoking, being sedentary, or having diabetes with elevated blood sugar levels are all associated with high triglyceride levels.
