TSH is an abbreviation for thyroid stimulating hormone. TSH testing is a blood test that detects this hormone. TSH levels that are too high or too low may indicate a thyroid issue. 

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck. Your thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate how your body uses energy. Thyroid hormones have an impact on almost every organ in your body, including your heart. They assist in the regulation of your weight, body temperature, muscle strength, and even your mood. Many of your body's functions slow down if you don't have enough thyroid hormones in your blood. Many body functions accelerate when you have too much. 

The pituitary gland is a brain gland that regulates your thyroid. Thyroid stimulating hormone is produced by the pituitary gland (TSH). TSH informs your thyroid about how much thyroid hormone it needs to produce. 

If your blood thyroid hormone levels are too low, your pituitary gland produces more TSH to tell your thyroid to work harder. When your thyroid hormone levels are too high, the pituitary gland produces very little or no TSH. TSH levels in the blood can tell you if your thyroid is producing the right amount of hormones. 

What is its purpose?

A TSH test is used to determine how well your thyroid is functioning. It can detect hyperthyroidism (excess thyroid hormone) or hypothyroidism (insufficient thyroid hormone) in your blood. However, a TSH test cannot determine what is causing a thyroid problem. 

If you take prescription thyroid hormone medication for hypothyroidism or had your thyroid removed, your thyroid hormone levels will be checked on a regular basis. TSH tests are also used to monitor your thyroid hormone levels after hyperthyroidism treatment. 

Why do I require a TSH test?

If you have symptoms of too much or too little thyroid hormone in your blood, you may require a TSH test. 

Hyperthyroidism (excess thyroid hormone) is also known as overactive thyroid. Having more thyroid hormones than necessary speeds up your body's functions and causes symptoms such as: 

• Weight loss, even if you're eating more than usual
• A fast or irregular heartbeat
• Feeling tense or irritable?
• Sleeping difficulties and exhaustion
• Hand tremors, muscle weakness
• Sweating or extreme heat sensitivity
• Constant bowel movements (pooping a lot)
• Goiter (enlarged thyroid) 

Hypothyroidism (insufficient thyroid hormone) is also known as underactive thyroid. Thyroid hormone deficiency slows down your body's functions and causes symptoms such as: 

• Weight gain Fatigue
• Being extremely sensitive to cold
• Muscle and joint pain
• Dry skin and hair that is thinning
• Menstrual cycles that are heavy or irregular
• Depression
• Constipation
